Contrary to their many cousins on the family tree who are mainly nocturnal, the snowy owl is diurnal in order to take full advantage of the continuous daylight of their arctic summer home in their pursuit of their favorite treat, the lemming. Their corresponding high visibility also makes them a popular owl ambassador even among non-bird watchers. From their big, piercing yellow eyes to their distinctive feathers, the snowy owl is such a beloved subject for the artists ...Read more of post

Is the candy cane a gift from the Sugar Plum Fairy during the nutcracker's visit to the Land of the Sweets? It appears that only the stroke of midnight will release the nutcracker from his porcelain shell and allow him to regale us with the story of a dramatic battle against a ruthless royal rodent. Until then, there is much to admire in his opulent military dress with gold and rust fishnet details and dramatic epaulettes that speak to his bravery and eminence.

The golden hour of daylight and the majestic scenery of his forest home are reflected in the burnished coat of Herend's stately moose. A creative scene within a scene, the artists at Herend have rendered a remarkably rich composition using just two colors.

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

"No other member in the whole class of mammals is colored in so extraordinary a manner as the adult male mandrills" wrote Charles Darwin in "The Descent of Man". It should therefore come as no surprise that the artists at Herend would want to capture this striking animal in porcelain - but with their usual Herend twist. Combining Herend's signature fishnet with the Mandrill's fantastical colors, this figurine is a dazzling homage to the world's ...Read more of post

With echoes of caryatids, the draped female figures used as columns in ancient Greek architecture, Herend's sculptor has created a compote supported by three elegant seahorses with draping as well - albeit with a pattern alluding to the intricate armored plates that cover their bodies. Once this piece was given to the painting studio, the artists added to the story by decorating each seahorse in a slightly different fishnet color palette reflecting their maritime home. ...Read more of post

The intensity of this figurine resides with the sculptor who created a bird so dramatic one can almost feel the air currents emanating from its flapping wings. When it moved to the painting studio, the artists deferred to mother nature and simply accentuated the bird's fierce yellow eyes and added liberal touches of gold to its otherwise subtle brown coloration which the artists knew would be enough to impart the appropriate regal presence for such an iconic bird of prey...Read more of post

If there were a competition for synchronized swimming in the animal kingdom, this pair of seahorses would surely win gold both for their harmonized poses as well as the beauty of their costumes. For this aquatic show, the seahorses have anchored themselves to a gold coral barre and enlisted some sparkly seashells as back-up dancers.
